Subject: Leave Donation Request for Kathleen Kim
I would like to share with you information regarding an opportunity
to donate annual leave to a trademark attorney who is in need. Kathleen
Kim of Law Office 101 is now officially part of the USPTO leave donor
program. The following is a summary of her family's current situation:
Kathleen and her husband John Kim (a former Patent Examiner) have a
six- year-old daughter, Emily, who was diagnosed with Leukemia at the age
of 3. Emily was treated at Children's Hospital in Washington for two
years. After two years of treatment she went into remission.
However, Emily's successful fight with cancer was interrupted last
week when a reoccurrence of the leukemia was discovered. She had a
blood
transfusion and surgery last week. Emily is home now but still must
undergo many returns to Children's Hospital, especially each Monday for a
very painful spinal tap. Emily may also need blood transfusions in the
future. Children's Hospital is performing a more aggressive chemotherapy
approach this time. But, it is believed that she will need a bone marrow
transplant to survive. A separate email will be sent regarding the bone
marrow drive for Emily that will be conducted at the PTO on May 1st and
May 2nd.
Kathleen will shortly exhaust all of her leave. Moreover, Kathleen
is 39 weeks pregnant and thought she was saving her leave for maternity
purposes. Kathleen will soon be hospitalized at Holy Cross to give
birth
to her son. Thereafter, she will have a newborn son to take care of in
addition to caring for Emily, which at a minimum requires attending
doctor's appointments, constantly monitoring Emily's temperature and
dispensing her medication. In addition, she has to provide the emotional
support necessary to encourage Emily to fight through the days and nights
to come, the pain, the loss of hair, and all other side effects of this
disease. It is estimated that Kathleen will be absent for a minimum of 8
months.
To donate leave to Kathleen so that she can make it through this
difficult and critical time, please visit the Human Resources page on the
USPTO's Intranet under the section entitled HR FORMS (towards the bottom
of the page) at http://ptoweb/ptointranet/ohr/index.htm
or print out and
complete the attached form:
<<leave transfer form.pdf>>
The form should be dropped off with Leslie Warner, who is in Crystal
Park 1, Suite 707. If more convenient, you can drop off the form with
either Julie Watson (Law Office 104), Angela Wilson (Law Office 101),
Cimmerian Coleman (Law Office 102), or Goli Gharib (Law Office 113).
I encourage you to forward this e-mail to anyone who may be
interested in donating leave to Kathleen. Any well wishes and/or cards can
be forwarded to any of the above.
On behalf of Kathleen and her family, I thank you for your help.
